Area Code 616 originally covered all of western lower Michigan and all of upper Michigan. Area codes 231, 269, 616 and a portion of 517 combine to form the Grand Rapids LATA. Area code 906 forms the Upper Peninsula Michigan LATA.

Upper Michigan split to become the 906 area code in January 1961 (with permissive dialing ending in July 1961).



Area Code 231
Northwest lower Michigan (north of Grand Rapids) was split from 616 to become the 231 area code on June 5th, 1999. Permissive dialing of landline phones as 616 ended October 2nd, 1999. Permissive dialing to wireless numbers ended October 2nd, 2000.

Southwest lower Michigan (south of Grand Rapids) was split from 616 to become the 269 area code in 2002 (details below).
The 616 area code remains in service for only the area around Grand Rapids.

The 269 area code was placed into service on July 13th, 2002. Permissive dialing of landline phones as 616 ended February 15th, 2003. Permissive dialing to wireless numbers ended February 15th, 2004.
